Quill, Inkwell, written wordEchoes Take Time

Most mornings, I know what I want to write…
A writer group posted that if you write and no one reads, can you call yourself a writer?
It depends on why and if you are writing for others or yourself.
Finding an audience takes time.

To stand in a place known to echo back your voice,
If you make a sound and no echo returns,
Do you judge yourself as a failure?

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it,
Did it make any noise?

Every day, for several years, I’ve written my morning thoughts.
Fresh from my mind, sometimes helped by prior thoughts,
I share as my mind unloads to the fingers on the keyboard,
And the eyes are gazing at the monitor.

Grammarly knows I’ve written. Statistics prove it.
I know I’ve written. So does my bride.
Where are the return echoes of agreement or dispute?
I know I’m patient. I’ve been blogging for over a dozen years.
But somewhere down the road, a place over the hill, around the bend,
There is an echo response that lets me know I’m not writing in vain.

While I write, the world changes.
Reels are popular. I know. I create some and receive thousands of views.
One screen of 50 words or more, and the stats show it’s liked, read, and sometimes shared.
Here I am… Writing a 1,000-word average blog post per day. Few echoes…

While I read voluminous tomes, people want the short story.
While I yearn for century-scapes, others want a poignant story of a few minutes.
I want to dig in, and some would much rather hear the lighter side of the story (in the voice of Paul Harvey.)
I want to read each step; others want only the final page.

How many words do you read?
How many words have been written?
There’s a guess that may be true…
Humanity has written/created approximately 4*10^16 words, or around 40 quadrillion.

I pause. Research. Think it through…
An echo is heard when the sound waves bounce from a hard surface.
You hear back only what can not be received.
It may be the original sound waves are still traveling… (Voyager 1, anyone?)
Maybe I don’t need echoes because the words are soaking in.
“Never mind!” (Gilda Radner on SNL)

Maybe a style change is in order. Who knows?
Maybe focused writing will attract attention.
Regardless of the results… I’ll keep writing.

If I never hear an echo, I’ll keep writing.
If I never hear the sound, the tree keeps falling.
If my statistics fall below my expectations,
You got it. You better believe it… I’ll keep writing.
Who knows who will hear these words down the road of time?

The double entendre says a lot about my occupation, vocation, and calling if you know me.
If you don’t… Keep reading… Eventually, you’ll understand.

Thank you for reading.
Please share with others.
It helps me get my book written!
