Light Bulb, sharpened pencils, erasure, blank paperTry Something New

My blog site database has been struggling. I thought my hosting company would do more, but they sent me to several different solutions using tools I’ve never had to access before.

I’m nothing if I’m not willing to try something new.

At least in the tech world. Well. Maybe more worlds than just one!

Following their guidelines, I updated options, cleaned up some dirty-looking code (questionable code…), and optimized the database. It took an hour or so to realize that “I can do this!”

I’m not trained. There are terms I’ve never used. Formated data I’ve never had to review. But SQL commands? I’ve done that before.

I’m reminded of a scene from 30 years ago: Jurassic Park. The dinosaurs are loose, the park is a wreck, and the leading players have all gathered in the server room that manages monsters! Quickly… Let’s lock this place down! A computer has been rebooted. The young actress sits at the keyboard, “It’s a UNIX system… I know this.”

It’s a UNIX system… I know this!

Listen. I’ve worked on so many systems since 1972 that I’ve forgotten more than this young actress could know. She would not have known UNIX off the top of her head. I’ve touched UNIX but seldom had a production need to access it.

That’s Hollywood for you.

Recently, several people around me have started down new paths of adventure. I’m always excited and a bit envious when someone else takes on something I’ve already done or want to try. Watch. Listen. Learn. Keep your mouth shut. Do not tell the horror stories. Give support. Let them enjoy their journey!

I believe in following old paths but am also interested in new approaches.

Sometimes, we hesitate. Life throws up a roadblock. Jump that hurdle! Keep growing! If it’s not your cup of tea, then try something else. No matter what you do, keep striving to journey till your end when you can look over your shoulder with satisfaction. “Veni Vidi Vici!

A word of caution. Don’t let anything here prevent you from entering there. The greatest act of conquering will be hearing those famous words… “Well Done!

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
(Philippians 2:12-16 NKJV)
