Coffee and the WordThe Difference Maker

I love the flow of words.
As I pause to read and reread,
Some words make me think
Sometimes, words make me feel.
But anytime the words make me pause,
Those are the ones I come back to.

There’s a trigger between words and emotions
There is a fine line between doing their job and working
As opposed to making absolutely no sense
Except for the facts they state.
Some want the facts, just the facts (Joe Friday)
Others want the words to emote a feeling
I want them to make sense
And let me enjoy the way they make me feel.

Some authors I read at high speed
Absorbing the data they put into print
Other authors I read, go back to and read again
And make notes and take away messages.

It’s like drinking coffee
I’m not a snob. I’ll drink whatever swill is available.
But if I’m able to make the time,
I’ll peruse through the beans, smelling and imagining,
Grind, and whether drip or press, that first sip
Like words, I’ll have something to remember…
It’s something worth sharing.

Perhaps that’s why we like the psalmist the most.
Words written, recited, sung, and prayed,
Their purpose is real and brings deep emotions
Changing us for the better.
Words are a difference maker.

Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.
