On waking this morning, an errant thought flashed across my mind. Was my last failure truly a failure? You know what I mean. By your standards or anyone else you care to consider, we set standards of success to mean one thing and failure to mean another.

Edison famously said, “I didn’t fail 10,000 times that didn’t work. I succeeded in proving what wouldn’t work 10,000 times.” (Gurley translation…all mine.)

Sometimes, failure has unspeakable consequences. For most of us, they show what we shouldn’t do again in similar circumstances.

This morning, my thought is my truth: failure is never trying.

You could look at Jesus and say He failed, and the cross was His consequence. But you don’t know the whole story!

Pick on the Apostle Paul as he says, “I’ve finished my course…” but then asks Timothy to come quickly, bring my cloak, the books, and parchments… I wonder. Did he get them before Caesar took his life?

Failure is never trying and thinking there’s no use! Why worry? Why try? It’s not going to do a thing.

Do you want that attitude in the pilot of your plane? No! We want the pilot to keep trying to fix the problem lest we crash to our demise!

Nor do I want my doctor throwing up his hands and walking out the door… “It’s no use!”

Equally, I want my pastor to keep laying it out from the Word of God and never shirk his duty… Wait… That’s me! That’s why I will not quit!

Nor should you. Feel free to adjust your parameters or expectations, but keep on trying. Failure points you to something that didn’t work. This time. This situation. Your next attempt may be better!
