I Wish

A last longing look at the ending year
If we were truthful, we would say, Oh, well.
Not all things worked as we had planned
The times, attitudes, politics, and even crime
But if the truth were known, we are our own
Worst Enemy to Success all through This Year.

Oh, well? Could we not have done better?
I dare say we possibly could, and that’s the hopeful view.
The reality is that too often, we have a jaded view.
Of the past, you keep analyzing from various spots.
Successes, Failures, and the slippery slope
Of barely, barely, making it through.

As I pondered, weak and weary… Now, wait a moment!
Is that the way I want to consider where I am?
What did the year produce? I’m always agonizing!
What was done, ignored, skipped, or forgotten?
That’s a negative view, and I say, No Way!
It behooves me to ask: When will it get better?

Analysts galore give the low down on what worked.
A lot of what didn’t. How to make it better? Quick!
Forecast 2023 right now! Will we bounce back?
I’m not a futurist, except in the arena of trusting God.
If he’s got my back, then rest assured.
He’s the God of my Future!

Maybe wishes should float out with the tide.
Land on someone else’s bleak shores, not mine.
I will always strive to look at what’s best! Possible!
Keep moving forward! Step out boldly!
State the obvious, and don’t let the past haunt you!
I’m changing “I wish” into “I will…!”
