If traditions are important, why don’t I remember doing them when younger?

At some point, a turkey became the major focus, but I don’t remember it being a big deal until older. Like greeting cards, was it a marketing ploy?

I remember big spreads, specifically the foods I never liked, but I don’t remember what we had that was only for a holiday meal. Why is that?

I Remember

Dressing, never bread squares
but always with cornbread, bacon, and eggs.
But nothing was ever stuffed in the bird!
Cranberry was gel and sliced, sweet tea and coffee, no sparkling cider.
Mostly pies for dessert, and always Pecan and Pumpkin.
Big family tables with added card-playing folding tables for length.
No fancy table settings and cardboard plates were fine.
Sometimes we celebrated Thanksgiving at two different houses on the same day!

Thanksgiving was more about family gatherings
and less about food or setting delights.
I remember someone “saying grace.”
but never focusing on bird carving success.
Television never replaced conversation,
but games and puzzles were enjoyed,
It was dependent upon the weather.
Never snow, but we always had cooler weather than “last summer.”

Today and Right Now

Traditions Come and Go, but one thing Remains.
Be thankful, expect nothing, and appreciate everything.
If I say I miss you, will it make any difference?
Surprises are always welcomed.
