Bronze Sculpture ListeningListening and Hearing

Age brings many changes, or so the saying goes,
Muscles, skin, productivity, sights, and sounds…
I worry more about sight, and I’ve said it often before,
As long as I can see, my hearing can take a back seat to understanding.

Or something like that.
I’d much rather have the freedom of movement and the road,
Than not hear perfectly.
At least I can make sense with clarity. I think.

We’ve all been there at least once or twice.
What we think we heard, they declare,
It’s not what they said at all…
So I strain my ears to hear with my proverbial thinking cap on.

Crystal Radio

Maybe that’s why, at least since I was a tyke,
I’d much rather read than hear…
That scratchy Crystal Radio from Scouting days?
That’s what many conversations sound like now.

Let me read your speech. I skim fast.
If well written, I’m sure you’ll say it the same.
One thing I’ve learned about speaking,
Our speech is laced with pauses and punchlines
Delivered with theatrics… I know. That’s me. When I teach.
But it’s all in my mind when I write and read.

Between Listening And What I Hear: Pray the Word, Sing the Word, Store it up for later use! Click To Tweet

Last night at our monthly mid-week prayer meeting,
I watched the scriptures and songs displayed and wondered…
How much more sense they make when my mind is engaged,
Then, I miss their meaning when I hear them without thinking it through.

Pray the Word, Sing the Word, Store it up for later use!

Hand in glove. Seeing and hearing. Both Beneficial.
As long as my mind stays active at the moment.
The Words I hear and see prepare me for the future.
I’ll get what I need in the moment. Do you remember?
An Old Adage: When I teach, I learn twice.
Meaning: I always learn more as I teach after I prepare.

Therefore I speak to them in parables,
because seeing they do not see,
and hearing they do not hear,
nor do they understand.
(Matthew 13:13 NKJV)

The hearing ear and the seeing eye,
The LORD has made them both.
(Proverbs 20:12 NKJV)
