Measuring Tape, Marker and QuestionLife's Little Markers

A carpenter knows the full use of a tape measure,
As they go about building, constructing, and remodeling.
A seamstress knows all the uses for their measuring tape,
As they snip, tuck, and hmmm, sounds like a surgeon!

Each tic and mark means something special.
A novice learns, and an expert uses – they understand.
Each marker on the respective measure tape means something.
Do you know what?

Some workers have been around the house for months.
I listened carefully as they measured, marked, and cut.
Not one time did I hear a mistake, a redo, or try again.|
A mark was made, and a cut fit perfectly.

And then I thought…

We mark our lives with major milestones,
Birthdays, anniversaries, and the like.
In between the majors are many minors. Little Markers.
We each have these markers that mean something special to us,
Collections, trinkets, awards, keychains, and other stuff.

I worry about those who never make a mark in life…
They come, go, and soon they’re gone…
And no one marks their passing. They collected nothing.
They leave nothing behind.

Making an espresso this morning, I glanced to the side
And all the bags of coffee I have used since the pandemic,
Their labels have been snipped, banded, and stacked,
Someone suggested I needed a coffee journal! Hmm!

And then I thought of my trinkets and other important stuff
The markers of a life that likes to remember times.
A coffee cup from a favored stop 40 years back? Yep! Still used today.
A cigarette lighter collected 50 years ago? It works.
My little red rubber knife from over 60 years ago? That’s special!
The coins I still collect that began nearly 65 years ago? Memories!
All those gravestones in so many places of life. Markers each one.

Give me coffee anytime. I’ve never been a smoker. So why?
I’m sure there was an important reason to mark my life with such.

I realize we each have ways we mark the passing of our lives.
Friends, trips, and trinkets. Loved ones sitting next to stuff.
Whose to say mine are more important than yours? Not me.
Memories are made to remember in slower times.
Markers. Each one. Important to you. So, measure and mark away!

Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
For the future of that man is peace.
(Psalms 37:37 NKJV)
