Solitary sitting in an empty stadiumLearn to be Solitary

Songs shift through my mind,
This morning as I think of what it’s like
To be sitting in the house with a feeling
Of being solitary – and enjoying it.

My bride is still sleeping,
The social beast from distant shores clamors.
But nothing beckons my full attention
Like the silence of a solitary morning.

The dogs are fed, and that is enough
The noise they like to make,
Balls and rocks dropped for play
But after I’m back in, they break for the pasture
A neighbor has come out with his dog
I’m sure there’s no silence back there.

Maybe this is part of the solitary moment.
Hearing loss, tuning out, enjoying no sound.
I think of those older than me, Dad and Grandad
Who adapted to their silence.
Now I see. I understand. Hmmm. That’s me!

The phone rang at midnight.
Someone needed our help.
We did what we could, turn the ringer off,
And slipped into that quiet and mind-busy world
Of slumber. Wait! Dreams are solitary!

The morning routine is handled. That’s normal.
No sound makers are begging my attention. Normal.
I’m glad we’re empty nesters. Hmm! Normal!
Time to read and think. Yes. Solitary normal.

Psalms 62:1-12 NKJV

To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun.
A Psalm of David.
Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
How long will you attack a man?
You shall be slain, all of you,
Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
They only consult to cast him down from his high position;
They delight in lies;
They bless with their mouth,
But they curse inwardly.
Selah
My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.
Selah
Surely men of low degree are a vapor,
Men of high degree are a lie;
If they are weighed on the scales,
They are altogether lighter than vapor.
Do not trust in oppression,
Nor vainly hope in robbery;
If riches increase,
Do not set your heart on them.
God has spoken once,
Twice I have heard this:
That power belongs to God.
Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy;
For You render to each one according to his work.
