Wisdom SignpostYou Make Me Better

Daily Scripture Thought

It’s a sad thing to lose a friend,
Or even a member of your family.
Looking at life from the bleachers
From lessons that teach me to understand
I’ve learned that everyone makes me better.

We are all guilty of chucking a connection.
Throwing a wanna’ be out of our life.
Because they are obnoxious, unfriendly,
Or full of strident sounds we cannot agree with.

But I’ve learned a better truth.
Something that few will agree with.
No matter who you are or what you become
Everyone, yes, even you, make me a better person.

That’s a strange statement,
Or so you may think,
The truth comes back to me from you,
I learn how to be a better person

From the examples of you, whoever you may be
I learn the lesson of how to be or not to be.
What to say or not even think.
How you discount others, from that, I learn to not.

Jesus knelt in the sand when accusers discounted her.
They hoped to catch him doing wrong.
Without Sin? Cast the first stone.
They slink away, oldest to youngest.

Listen. The older we are, perhaps, the better we should see.
Lesson learned. All of them made me better.
Jesus simply looked at her – neither do I condemn thee.
Go! Sin no more! Again. I learn. Again. A better me.

That curious lesson of the prodigal
Teaches me to be more like the father.
Praying and searching, and hoping against hope.
One day, a return will be celebrated.

Yet, that older brother could not agree.
From this, I’ve learned more about myself.
It’s not my call, so why should I say it?
I’ve my personal life at stake.
See? He made a better me.

This is my key to life. Never turn someone away.
Enemy? Perhaps hold at a distance.
But learn from their mistakes.
Why? You improve yourself. I know. It works.
“Be a Better Me!”

One last thought, and I shouldn’t ignore this.
Reading God’s Word can be onerous and confusing.
But read it, and not just the sweet words.
I look at every word. Why? You know. A better me.

The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

To know wisdom and instruction,
To perceive the words of understanding,
To receive the instruction of wisdom,

Justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their riddles.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

(Proverbs 1:1-7 NKJV)
