Inmate in a cell counting down the days until freedomGuilty, says you, though I know I'm not.

Someone remembers a snippet of the past
They are hurt, wounded, and the day has just begun
You are accused, thrown out of their life
In reality, I always feel guilty
Even though I’m not.

Why feel guilty? Because we have all done something
Worthy of the feeling. Maybe not now, or then
But we’ve spoken, done, thought, or acted it out
In our minds, we know we were in the wrong
Just not caught. We carry that guilty feeling forward.

What’s worse than feeling guilty?
Someone thinking you are, punishing you for their view
And you sit with your hands in the air. What gives?
They walk out of your life, and you are left shaking your head.
Could I be guilty and not even know it?

Or, as was said to me, Think about it. When you realize I’m right…
Then we’ll talk. Ten months and counting,
And I’m not closer to a resolution
Than I was in that moment
The surprise came a flinging my way.

How do you handle it?
You put it in a box, sit it on the shelf, and patiently wait.
Someday you’ll understand it better.
But you must be willing never to comprehend the “why.”
Someone thinks you’re guilty, and you know you’re not.

It’s come to me more than I realize,
We live in the time of God’s Mercy
It’s not time for judgment. Why?
There is coming a day when we will all remember.
Yes. We are guilty, even when we felt we were not.
