Walking the Trails
Our Daily Walk

What is life if we only walk with God on a Sunday? We are fairweather Christians who only follow our God on the day we think of as Holy and Sacred. All other days are just life, lived like everyone else, and many times no deep thought about a Daily Walk. Perhaps in stormy times, we run to the church as many sailing vessels head into a safe port.

What if? What if our walk with God used that holy day foundation to build our response to life? Life would be different, I’m sure.

Let me share a quick thought about this.

Daily Bread

I’ve struggled through the years of following Bible reading schedules. Setting aside a particular time and allowing someone else to tell me what I should accomplish today? It seldom works for me. Yet, I pick up my word (tactile and digital) every day and allow the Word to speak. I don’t need anyone else reminding me of this, but it is probably a struggle for all at one time or another.

“After eating the world’s bread, we wake each morning to remember:
We are still hungry.
Seek a better loaf. Eat, and never die. Taste, savor, and be filled forever.”
― Calvin Miller, The Words of Christ: An Every Day Journey with Jesus

In perhaps the best scripture to teach me this, the Psalmist pens these now-famous words:

NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
(Psalms 119:105 KJV)

His Word shines to my feet, showing me its impact on daily living, all the while, it shines forward into the path of my life. How many times has the Word taken guided my steps differently than the choices of my own? Innumerable. Why? He is the Light of the world, and the attraction we turn to like a moth to bright lights in the night. (Luke 1:79, John 3:19)

He knows my steps, and if I trust Him, then He provides safe passage.

If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up.
(Psalms 94:18 NKJV)

Daily Prayer

Jesus builds on this principle by teaching the disciples how to pray. Yes. Just like we have the Daily Bread, we also have a Daily Prayer.

Give us this day our daily bread.
(Matthew 6:11 NKJV)

His example of daily prayer? It focuses on the Daily Bread. Lukes record of this teaching says, “Give us day by day our daily bread.” (Luke 11:3)

What if we treated Prayer as the conversation we so enjoy with a Friend? That takes it out of the formula and rote and turns it into a time of fellowship. It can be full of casual conversation where we listen, pause, then talk, pause, then listen.

Choose Your Daily Walk

The concept of a daily connection with God is truly life-altering. While writing and then sharing in my post from yesterday about Power and Beliefs, this prompted my mind to consider that most of my problems are about me. My choices. Desires. Beliefs. Am I the captain of my own will? Or do I trust in one greater than I? If I trust Him, I need to change.

Over us, and in us:
There is no change to what we become
unless we are willing to change what we are.

If you are willing to change, perhaps you need to understand something important: He knows what you are, and what you will become. You are no surprise, just as these times have not shocked our God.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
(Psalms 139:1-7 NKJV)

It’s a fruitful experience to walk daily with God.

Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah
