Every Man Is Right …. In his own eyes.
My memory is pretty astute at times, and very suspect at others. Of course, I must have experience in something for that memory to work. But the insiders view of this is that our memories are weighted for the moment of recall when we recite them to avow our current position. In fact, it is pretty human to slant the story to our benefit.
This is mentioned a number of times in scripture. For example, without a rule of law, mankind lives the way they choose.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. (Judges 21:25)
Without a lawgiver, or judge to rule, or king to direct, man choses his own path. Why? One reason is they chose in their own eyes what they will do, how they will live, and what they choose to remember about their lot in life. But give them something to buy into, a law or ruler that is good or bad, then their allegiance changes to the other direction.
They justify who they once were by their current definition of how they choose to remember their past…
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. (1 Corinthians 13:11)
Some people revert to their childhood when they recall their past. They justify their actions based on childhood memories. My memories of choices made at varying times of my life do paint me in a good light. Again, this is human. But what is right? I want to see my life in light of right. Not my own eyes but God’s eyes. That’s how I will be judged. So let’s change our perspective now. This will make us right in God’s eyes.
