Hand gripping life beatSin of Idleness

Jokingly, someone asked how I was enjoying the sin of idleness.

I understood it well. I don’t enjoy time with nothing to do. But here I am, recovering from surgery and having to sit with an elevated foot while the wound heals and the tissues calm down.

It was relatively minor, but the reaction to invasive surgery has the potential to be major. I was warned of recurring pain…take this. Should I get nauseated from the drugs…take this. Be sure to keep the baby aspirin coming to prevent blood clots. Oh, yeah, if you have a fever, swelling, soaking bandages, etc., call us quickly!

Then they gave me a special number to call – and that lifeline is invalid a week after surgery!

When it comes to forced idleness, I don’t do well. My mind is always doing, even when I’m forced to be still. Fortunately, technology has given me the edge of activity. The phone gives me the ability to connect, and the internet connects me to the world through news and entertainment.

During this season, I’ve slept better than I think I should. Even waking up after my bride, which 99% of the time this N-E-V-E-R happens, was easy. When the dogs howled at 3 a.m., I easily went back to sleep when I would have normally started my day earlier.

I may not be able to be “normal.”
But I’m not lost for something to do.
I’m thankful recovery is at home,
And not lying in a hospital bed.

Of course, my bride makes it easy for me
Coffee, breakfast, lunch, and comfort.
I feel guilty for her busyness…
Goodness, she has to get up early to feed the pooches…

I planned this time with a list to accomplish
Healing is coming along nicely,
So I may not finish it now…
Perhaps next week when I am more mobile? And how!

Some family is headed up from Texas
They will spend some time around the spread
I know my brother wants a list…
He’s worse than I when it comes to idleness.

Idleness can be wasted,
Not when you have appropriate tasks for the doing
Instead of walking, carrying, cleaning, or building,
I get to do what I do best…computering…

“Because of laziness the building decays,
And through idleness of hands the house leaks.”
(Ecclesiastes 10:18, NKJV)

Thank you for reading.
Please share with others.
It helps me get my book written!
