Soft morning light, pot, and cup of steaming coffeeMorning Routine

A special day has arrived. Yes. Foot surgery.
For 12 months, I’ve struggled with an issue.
Therapy, orthototics, shots – until they don’t work.
What remains? S-U-R-G-E-R-Y.

From midnight forward, no food, drink, gum, or mints.
Surgery will be canceled if I fail to comply.
I walked through the house to my computer.
“Routine” called out, “Hey! Come Back! You missed me!”

I remember my pre-operative orders.
Don’t be tempted. You need to get this done.
Oh, but how great is coffee when you can’t?
Morning routine? I’m stronger than you!

A different thought enters the space…
Routine can be simply a rut,
The treadmill that refuses to budge,
And like that stationary bike? You go nowhere.

Mix it up. Sleep past the crack of dawn.
Don’t leave me, my pillow cries out.
No! Not me! Impossible!
I’ll feel guilty if I do.

But for the pain, that coffee is made.
Cereal prepared. Hot and cold, side by side.
That’s my routine…nudged out of the way.
It’s time to leave for surgery…
My injury has won over my routine!

I know what it is to be in need
and what it is to have more than enough.
I have learned this secret,
so that anywhere, at any time,
I am content,
whether I am full or hungry,
whether I have too much or too little.
I have the strength to face all conditions
by the power that Christ gives me.
(Philippians 4:12-13 GNB)
