Spilled coffee cupWatch Out! What's in Your Cup?

It’s a surprising thought to think through
When bumped or an accidental step occurs
It’s quick to blame the event on someone else
Instead of owning the moment of your response.

Imagine you’re carrying a load, some important, or perhaps not.
It matters little what’s your load, but your response matters a lot.
Accidents will happen, but you carry your response with you.
It leaks out as it sloshes, and suddenly you reveal “you.”

What’s on the inside comes splashing outward.
Your thoughts, reactions, and hidden words
They are slung about because of the moment
Just seconds ago, you would never dream of sharing.

I’m guilty of letting my responses spill out
Those hidden thoughts, frustrations, and even doubt
How can we hold them in when Life suddenly jostles us about?
There is a key, and some would define it with words. Yes. That’s me.

Jesus knew the importance of what’s inside.

And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.
For from within, out of the heart of men,
proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness,
an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
(Mark 7:20-23 NKJV)

So, we should learn to stop the focus outwardly.
The other shoe will drop, and suddenly it spews from within.
A true thought, a once unspoken word, or an emotional response.
Uh Oh… I never thought, you may say, but it’s there. Watch Out!

This is why we don’t judge a book by its cover.
But often, it’s the cover that attracts our attention.
It was 1967, at our church youth camp in East Texas.
The boys were ushered together for a session.
In the chapel, and it was the only place A/C’d.
Rev. Elzine Strong said this, and with it, I close.

Beauty’s on the skin
Ugly’s to the bone
Beauty fades away
But ugly stays on!
