I have often looked at life as something that is constantly changing. Events. Standards. Expectations. You know, buy the latest and greatest gizmo, only to see it outdated within a few months or days. Your experience should be as good as the best you have ever experienced. But that’s asking a lot.
You must learn to go with the flow and that everything around you
is constantly challenging your expectations.
Nothing stays the same.
Everything “always” changes.
Except…there is something that does not change.
I picked up some fast food the other day and remembered the same burger as first experienced 30 years ago. Imagine a company keeping everything the same for a lifetime of enjoyment.
Coke went “new” and had to revert to “classic.” Classic is still on the label today. That first fiasco showed up nearly 40 years ago. There was a mad rush to buy all the existing products before the new ones took over the shelf space.
Cars never stay the same. They all look the same today. There’s nothing new and exciting. They are all computers with four wheels. Wait! That’s staying the same, right?
Words are another platform of change. Bad is good. Sweet has nothing to do with taste. Slang words come and go so quickly. I use Grammarly to help me write better, but when I run the program on an ancient classic, Grammarly goes crazy trying to improve those words!
Several people have complained lately that they are tired of updating their computers. “Why can’t they stay the same?” Welcome to change! In the old days, you had to change typewriter ribbons, and when electric came along with a faster typing speed than manual, it seemed we couldn’t wait for that new Selectric to be priced where we could afford it.

Every generation faces change while the older generations struggle to adapt.
78, 45, 33 1/3, Wax to Vinyl, Reel to reel, 8-track,
Cassettes, iPod, and now? Digital streaming service.
I’m sure I’ve missed a step or two. I remember when I could never imagine wireless internet as something that is now available everywhere. All our data floating in the ether, ready to be snatched by a ner-do-well. Where’s it going to be “new” next?
Through my walk on the “what’s new” thought, I’ve suddenly realized the benefit of not being a stick-in-the-mud at keeping everything the same as it was back in my young years of the 50s and 60s. Those were good ol’ years, but we can never go back.
I’m re-reading “Earth Abides” by George R Stewart. It’s about a group of people who are survivors after a scary disease wiped out 99.9999% of the population. Though he speaks about the survivors adapting, he’s also dealing with the earth reclaiming its space to be as natural as it can possibly be.
Even after a change, nothing stays the same. That’s life. Flow!
But God
When you read the Bible, you find life as it existed thousands of years ago. Visit the same location today, and you will find change.
But God says he never changes. (Malachi 3:6, Hebrews 13:8)
The writer of a New Testament book, James, deals with our faith and the constant testing we face with our beliefs. He makes a statement that should be the bedrock of our faithfulness.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
and comes down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
(James 1:17 NKJV)
Amid our constantly evolving life, God never changes. Just because we do, doesn’t mean God is stretching himself to keep up with our latest and greatest thinking and doing. From before time, God is still the same God in our time.
This is the key to survival. Life Changes, But Not God! He’s always the same and deals with our constantly changing world the same way. His way. Not our fickle view of what’s right and wrong.
