Every Day Has PurposeEvery Day Has Purpose

Scripture tells us to esteem no day higher than the other (Romans 14:5). Then it tells us about specific feasts, fasts, and tabernacle events. Holydays. Days, times, and seasons of no work, and then to work for the day comes when no man will be able to function. Hmmm. Sounds like every day has a purpose!

Yesterday was a day set aside to give thanks. Today is Black Friday. Why is it called this? Up to this day businesses operated in the red (negative), but supposedly this single day turns their bottom line black (positive). [Source]

Saturday is Small Business (support your local mom & pop). Next Monday is Cyber, Tuesday is #Giving, Somewhere along the day will be the Last Shipping Day and then come all the named days for Christmas. Don’t forget, Boxing Day will show up for our friends up north.

Somewhere along the way we’ve got to think about ourselves and for ourselves: What’s the purpose of this day?

My Thought Today

My thought today is simple. Every day has a purpose, even if it does not have a name. I want to be profitable and busy with every moment given to me, even if that means sitting back and resting awhile.

As we age it’s easier to settle into a dull routine. But that’s not how I want to live. Get up. Go. Do. Hmmm… Sounds like my early P.D. Eastman reading is at work! Go Dog! Go!

Some hang their personality in the closet as they stumble about their downtime. Robe up when you come back in from playing. Now, be the person everyone thinks you are.

King David teaches us that every day is a day to share the salvation of God. (1 Chronicles 16:23, Psalms 92:2). Every day we share what we believe, and there are many watching to determine if we will do it today. Little hands and eyes are hanging about. Ankle biters. Just waiting to see if the grownups will do what they teach.

You know the story. Zacchaeus. Sycamore tree. Wee little man. Wants to see Jesus. Come down! I’m going to your house to abide. But then, Jesus said something amazing to all listening:

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house,
because he also is a son of Abraham;
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
(Luke 19:9-10 NKJV)

If for just a moment we would pause. Think. Then, respond appropriately. Every person we come in contact with, this is the day to share salvation. We don’t choose who, we simply obey.

Today

I have a circle of people I connect with within my life. It’s not my job to tell them I’m a pastor, but it is my duty to share with them a better path. Today. While it is my day.

Recently, picking up supplies at a local big box hardware store I made that connection with the words I always use: Where you from originally?

It is simply my conversation starter and it opens up some marvelous doors. They receive my question and step into the door of conversation, and Voila! I’ve made a new contact. Now what? Tread the minefield of gotcha moments, and slowly the conversation takes the path of my calling. Reaching people as Jesus did with Zacchaeus.

It’s that simple.

Today’s world is different. Social media has made so many inroads into our life. Why not use it for a better purpose? No arguing, or joining causes. Rather. Connect. Share your day. It has a purpose.
