Sunday BlessingSunday Blessing

Slowly but surely we’ve watched Sunday change from a day of worship and rest. It’s become that busy day of family, activities, events, and focus on ending this weekend the best way possible! Monday’s coming and we all know how blue that day is!

For those of us who are involved in Sunday Church activities (preaching, teaching, greeting, leading, singing, running sound, graphics, getting the building ready and keeping it sparkling, etc.), well, for many this is simply another workday – only we are working with a different goal in mind. It’s our day of service so that others will find what they need when they show up at church.

The same could be said about a mid-week service. Growing up in Texas, we never missed because of school or sports. Church came first, and all others had to revolve around this commitment.

Things Change

This is not how things are today! There is much competition for every spare minute of our time. From Hollywood to Sports, from school to other extracurricular activities, and from traffic keeping us on the roads longer, and our financial life almost demands both spouses work to put the roof over the head and food on the table!

The demands on our attention and time have increased!

When I was young, most “barber” shops were opened on Saturday but closed Sunday and Monday so they could have a two-day weekend. In Texas, there existed a “Blue Law” that mandated all retailers would close one day on the weekend. If you wanted to open on Saturday, then you closed on Sunday. If you wanted to open on Sunday, then you closed on Saturday. That law came into being when I was 6 years old and was repealed after I had been married 11 years. (1961, 1985, respectively.) However, the concept of a day of rest still exists for many of us, only, it’s generally a day of rest from our labors where we get a paycheck!

If we know anything about life it is that change keeps happening and nothing stays the same. Not only has Sunday regressed to a single Church service, but it’s also more and more difficult to get Wednesday Bible Study focused as it used to be. Barbershops seldom exist and most hair salon’s are opened 7 days a week! Many retail stores are not 24/7 places of shopping pleasures. The internet keeps the world going every second of every minute in every hour of the day!

Think about all the changes we’ve seen in our short lifetime. To which, I say, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!”

So. What’s the Sunday Blessing?

I keep my focus first on Christ. He returns his focus to me. I’ve set aside my Sunday to be His Day and seldom ever miss the opportunity to be involved in His House.

The result? What I’m blessed with on Sunday carries me forward every single day of my life. That’s my Testimony!
