How Will You Survive?

We often look at our existence… And simply hope we survive. It’s not necessarily about winning, just making it through the trial. It’s almost like we are waking up to a drought and wonder,

Where did this come from? What do I do now? How long will it be like this? Click To Tweet

This morning I am thinking about all of those who have no hope of survival. Those who play around with important things and think not too far into the future or their actions. They dally with life and make no preparations for the future.

In fact, this must be on the mind of many. Reality TV, apps and games, books, and movies – they all seem to speak of surviving some horror or apocalypse. I’m sure there are great experiences to be had while watching or playing, but the reality is most will not make it. Oh no! Zombie Apocalypse! Contagions that cannot be stopped! Alien battles!

Scripture speaks of terrible times, and it seems like there are centuries of stories revolving around those who never make it. Lost. Abandoned. Hopeless. It seems like we are born into, and to live a life full of, trouble.

“Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble. He comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and does not continue.” (Job 14:1-2 NKJV)

It’s not that the hounds of trouble are on our heels. No! It’s everywhere. In front. Above. Below. All around. Life gets so complicated. Right. Wrong. Yes. No. Go. Stay.

In the same chapter as the scripture above, the write goes on to show that even when stopped by life (trouble), there is still hope for a renewal.

“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And that its tender shoots will not cease. Though its root may grow old in the earth, And its stump may die in the ground, Yet at the scent of water it will bud And bring forth branches like a plant. ” (Job 14:7-9 NKJV)

Life changing “scent of water” that causes the branches to seek out sustenance to bring it out of a drought!

2015-09-08 17.26.34Where I live it seems that most trees that are not native to this area, as seedlings they are spliced into a root ball that knows how to exist in this soil. They grow, but only because there is a root system that thrives. In my backyard, a tree/shrub I bought and planted over 5 years ago produced Apples last year! What? Apples? Yes. It was simply an ornamental, decorative and flowering plant – but at its root was an apple twig. They now grow twisted together and apples are produced on the high branches.

Talk about hope in an almost hopeless situation! The apples taste good, albeit they are small. The horses next door enjoy their sweetness. Even my dogs love to chomp down on them and look to the branches and in the grass for a fallen flavor. In fact, I can stand at the fence, slice apples to give to the horses and dogs, and they just stand around awaiting their turn!

Intertwined with your everyday living in the hope of something better. Look for the good things and quit thinking about all the bad things! Live life fuller with hope for a better tomorrow! It may get worse, but it’s going to get better! At least for the survivor…
