Yes… He was created as a parody of Superman and came into being in 1942. (Amazing that he shows up shortly after the US entrance into WWII.) His outfit changed several times, but most of the action was very much like Superman. Crisis arises, probably between Pearl Pureheart and his arch nemesis, Oil Can Henry, and Mighty Mouse swoops in and makes all things right!
In his early years his name changes from The Mouse of Tomorrow, to Super Mouse, and finally Mighty Mouse.
As a kid, cartoons were not my normal Saturday morning routine. As I have stated many times, I enjoyed the drama series of Tarzan, Bomba, and others. But when that theme song began, it was enough to stop everything and enjoy a few thrilling moments!
Have you ever felt like this? A crisis arises and you swoop in with the answer to the day! Hollywood, entertainers, writers (Louis L’Amour, Tom Clancy, etc.)… they all had the answer to redeem the crisis with an unlikely hero. Maybe he was just an every day persona, or a quiet dark figure who abhorred the spotlight, and when the situation is resolved, he will ride off into the sunset like Zorro, Roy Rogers, or the Lone Ranger. Seldom do we expect a Schwarzenegger type to be the one to the muscle in and fix every problem. Just about every super hero of comic fame has a real-to-life role they play in public that is seldom like their masked talents portray. Superman was a mousy and timid reporter, Batman was a rich reclusive, the Hulk was an ex-scientist who hid from the limelight. These are what normal super heroes of are like!
If in the modern fiction world we can have adult cartoon characters that have yellow skin, so, why can we not have a super hero like Mighty Mouse!
With a Mario Lanza style singing introduction, you could not help pay attention to the few minutes of Salvation!
Mighty Mouse cartoons spoofed the cliffhanger serials of silent films, as well as the classic operettas of stage that were still popular at the time. The characters often sing mock opera songs during these cartoons (e.g., Pearl: “Oil Can Harry, you’re a villain!”; Oil Can Harry: “I know it, but it’s a lot of fun…”). Mighty Mouse sings tenor, Pearl is a soprano, and Oil Can Harry a bass-baritone. Mighty Mouse is also famous for singing, “Here I come to save the day!” when flying into action. Late last night, my wife thanked me for three things, and these three things were special. They are not abnormal, but it was a nice gesture on her part to thank me and I appreciated it so much. It came to me… at that moment… that I was her “hero”! I immediately recalled Mighty Mouse!
Why not? I am not a Willis, Schwarzenegger, Ryan, Bourne type of person. I’m studious, kind, caring and her best friend. So, why try to be something I am not? My hidden talents are not character driven as in a novel. My talents are published in everything I do. Just like Mighty Mouse. We never see him putting on cloaks to disguise himself to the every day public. No, every time we see him he is “in character” and living his calling and talents.
The bible is full of characters that arise to the challenge, and most of them are unlikely heroes: Gideon, Moses, Job, David, Jeremiah… This list is L-O-N-G! So why not mirror our characters and traits after those that have the call of God on their lives? Jesus should be the greatest hero (if that is a proper term) that any should have. Yet, he was not the most recognized characters except how he is prophesied of and spoken of in the Gospels.

I heard a report on the radio yesterday, and read the news about it this morning. The “10 Lowest Paying College Majors” by King5. Even though I have had a high paying career in IT, God called me into a role of ministry where my biggest job is to serve the people I pastor. My calling is in the 10 lowest paying college majors… If I were into life for the money then my IT career would have been my focus more than my calling. I have good company in this list: Educators (well, I do teach online college), Social Services (well, I do a lot of social counseling), Behavioral Science… It seemed like everything I do in my calling is found in this list!
But money isn’t everything. Fulfilling my calling has a higher reward.
I get to be like Mighty Mouse! Now, where is my singing voice?
