Me and my free pony circa 1971
I Loved Horses

While perusing some friends on social,
People I’ve known for 50 years or more,
I got to thinking about how life would be different
If we had then what we take for granted now.

One friend loves animals
Who knew? Certainly not me.
It never came up in conversation.
Or shared across the lunch table.
Or in the Blue Barn.
Or on the gym floor
Or at the Friday Night Lights event.

Due to social media, I learn.
What if I had known this back then?
How different our conversations would be?

Another friend likes a particular flavor of music,
While others share their craftiness, studies, and trips.
What if we had known this about each other back then?
Would life have turned out any differently?

Of course, our teeming teenage years of hormonal growth
It could never allow us to share in yesterday’s world.
My joy of animals, travel, history, reading, and writing
Did not equate to my future in IT or Ministry.

Add to that, how I despised the heat.
Give me the cold that suits me to a “T.”

Rolling out of the 60s into the adult 70s,
We began exploring the growth of technology.
Reel-to-reel, AM, FM, 8-track, and then Cassette…
Landline slowly gave way to mobile.
Black and white TVs slowly died as color filled the world.
The transistor was a game changer!

Life was changing speedily.
We didn’t even know of the Internet,
Communication satellites are barely numbered in the dozens.
Today? Back then, it was equal to the Dark Ages!

Sliderules replaced by calculators,
Made by TI (Texas Instruments)
Bought by those willing to sacrifice dollars
And carried in belt holsters like a 6-shooter.

Automatic transmissions and A/C’s
My first car did not even have a seatbelt.
Don’t surprise me with airbags!
With metal everywhere, they were heavy.
Even when they were small.

Today? Can you imagine life without?
A Mr Coffee, a Microwave, or an electric can opener?
Back then? I remember burning our trash in a barrel!
Who would have thought recycling would become the norm?

With a look over my shoulder
Living in these present days
I wonder what the future will hold
For similar-aged teens, we once were?

Thank you for reading.

It helps me get my book written!
