This morning, I imagined Jesus’ followers
The Passover is history
The Sabbath is real
And their Leader is buried.
A tomb, with a massive stone rolled in front.
Guarded so that no one tries anything.
And all they can do is … what?
What would you do?
Your hope is crushed.
The future looks bleak.
An arrest may be imminent.
Didn’t we flee from the Garden?
Didn’t one of us deny we knew Him in public?
We are falling apart.
As in any funeral or memorial service,
Someone starts to share the good memories.
Tears come for different reasons.
Hugs become normal.
Our sorrow changes to joy.
Misery to acceptance.
And hopelessness? Some Day, we think—some day.
Didn’t Jesus teach us that one final time?
Gathered around the Passover table.
John 13-17 tells the lessons He shared.
From doing the lowliest job of washing feet
Then, on to praying a priestly prayer before departure.
He knew what was about to occur.
Who were we to Him?
He teaches us, again…
A new commandment I give unto you,
That ye love one another;
As I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,
If ye have love one to another.
(John 13:34-35 KJV)
The lessons are too numerous to list
Each one opens the thought to another time and place
Didn’t He talk about this there, and then?
But He’s bringing the lesson home to us, here and now.
Why is He telling us all of this again?
Is this the last we’ll hear from Him?
Let us show our love for one another… even Judas.
Why was yesterday so poignant?
Could we have not prevented Him?
No. Even the demons had no control.
He was of a right mind and spirit.
Legally, He was doing what He knew was necessary.
We were clueless, even with His Words telling us,
Even our statements showed we didn’t know.
Philip said to Him,
“Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”
(John 14:8 NKJV)
Oh, Philip. Have I not been with you so long?
Even now, you say you have not known me.
But wait. There is a promise yet to come.
A Helper. The Spirit of Truth.
I will not leave you orphans.
I will come to you.
Keep my commandments.
Love me. Love others.

Yes.. I read this on Good Friday.
Tomorrow. It will come quickly, but not quickly enough.
We will trudge to the tomb.
Still carrying our grief.
And all the supplies to finish the job.
We must finish anointing His body for burial.
It was so hurried yesterday.
Sabbath was quickly approaching.
There was no time. No time.
It’s Sabbath… But tomorrow is coming.

Thank you for reading.
Please share with others.
It helps me get my book written!
