Early morning…trying to force myself to stay in bed, I got to playing the odds in my mind. What are the odds I’ll get up at 6:30 instead of 5:30? Statistics speak loudly, but the likelihood of later over earlier is practically non-existent.
When I awake, I get up.
There’s nothing about lingering,
That would keep me lying prone.
Sitting up sets my mind at ease.
That’s life.
There’s no denying it.
Life isn’t made to live
Forced to stay in bed.
I recall crawling out of bed as a youngster, staying overnight at a cousin’s house. It was early, and the sun was out. That was our routine. But this time I only wanted to go to the bathroom down the hall. “Stay in bed!” came the commanding voice from across the hall. I didn’t know what to do, but nature forced the moment, and I ignored the voice.
As kids, we were allowed to watch Saturday morning cartoons until 9 a.m. Competing shows included Tarzan and other adventure shows. The broadcast TV signal was a Test Picture that sometimes included an Indian head, but often some sort of crosshairs.

But at nine, the TV goes off, and the next three hours are spent doing chores. Living on gravel roads, baseboards needed to be washed, rugs beaten, screens hosed, and a myriad other duties to keep the house as sparkling as possible.
Today, the likelihood of my routine changing is practically non-existent. My morning scripture takes me down a thought-provoking path that becomes crowded with the possibilities of meaning and research.

This is one of my mornings’ greatest processes. How likely is it that I’ll skip the routine? Nope! There’s Gold in these Words! The Words Jesus speaks are life and Spirit. You learn that if you don’t stick to just one verse! (John 6:63)
Today’s routine fits me to a “T,” and the likelihood of change will be only to improve it.
Do you have a routine? Are you likely to change it? Is there something better you would do that you don’t do because your routine doesn’t include it? It may be time to make some adjustments.
