I remember the olden days,
Not long after party lines were normal.
We had hardwired phone equipment.
Hanging on the wall with a long cord for the receiver.
When awaiting a call.
You had to stay near the phone.
It’s tethered in the wall.
The only thing you can do is wait.
Fast forward 70 years. Today.
I’m awaiting a phone call
Some repair work for my truck
I dropped it off yesterday
They hope to look at it today.
I make it to the office (ha…)
And boot, reboot, and restart
My PC’s so I can face the day.
I don’t allow my mobile to ring
Until I’m ready to use it to converse.
I glance to see a call has come through
It’s not who I wanted,
And could be a scam, spam, or other nefarious action.
But they leave a voicemail.
A state government agency.
I verified the number and called them back.
Listen! There’s concern in another’s voice.
Am I a victim? No.
I need to come by and do some verification.
Come on down… See you Tuesday.
Hanging up… I pause…
Me? A victim?
That one call, that’s all it takes,
And my day goes up in smoke.
So, I follow my process to take it in stride.
Breath in slowly, hold…and exhale very slowly.
Biofeedback for me.
It brings my moment out of weirdness.
There’s something to investigate and learn.
I guess.
If it’s necessary, I’ll share the result.
If it’s not, then lesson learned.
Not everything you know needs to be shared…
