I’ve never struggled with the idea that friends are hard to make. The Bible teaches me:
A man who has friends must himself be friendly,
But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
(Proverbs 18:24 NKJV
I’m am a friendly type of person.
Nor do you have any struggle reaching me where I am
But I promise you there are times when we all struggle
To be a friendly person to one and all.
But there is a kicker…
There always is
Your version of friendly
May not be what others want.
Some years back
Someone told me I smiled too much
That’s not my problem
It’s just who I am.
But I learned the lesson,
No matter how you feel about it
You will not make friends with everyone
No matter how hard you try.
Shrug. That’s life. Their loss. My gain.
I no longer have to worry about them
They’re not interested in me
Again. I’m not the loser in this equation.
I savor my friends
Each comes from a different place
And I’m so much the better for it
Richer by far than I have a right to deserve.
What is a friend to me?
I have several in Tennessee…
One from a decade or so back
And the other from the mid-1970s.
What’s my answer?
A friend is one who helps me be better
While I am there to help them do the same.
We are equal to the task of what the other needs.
And we enjoy our conversations
Time around the table of life
Carrying each other’s burdens as needed
And finding a shoulder who is there at just the right time
Who’s that ultimate friend?
The one closer than a brother.
I’ll explain that one another day.
