Book with title Regretting the Regrets
Regretting Regrets

I’m always thinking about how something could be better.
Did I respond correctly? Or did I not do as well as I could have?
It ends up being the feeling of regret.
Yes. I could have handled that better.

Yet, isn’t that life?
We seem to live in a world of wishing for second chances.
Perhaps the more prominent issues are simple to think about.
It seems we regret the regret.

Regret keeps me living with an eye on the backward glance.
Over my shoulder, I keep the past in view.
But as I’ve said many times here of late:
We live so close to the past and the past can waylay the future.

But what about taking a moment to think about regrets?
In 100% pure honesty, I deal with regret often.
Reaching a point where the feeling is real,
You can grow and change by the choices you make.
Or you can be a victim bemoaning the choice you or others made.
Winner or loser.
In control, or not.
Circling the wagons or continuing the journey.
Happy or sad.
Up, or maybe down.
But wish you had considered the moment better.

I’m a slow mover.
Perhaps ponderously so.
I’m willing to think things through
Because I’ve witnessed what quick reaction,
Or speaking without thinking…
It’s often ugly. Hurtful. And does none any good.
Yeah… Knee-jerk living produces the most regrets.

This morning, thinking about certain situations in my life,
I’ve regretted the lack of action I should have taken,
And spend way too much time regretting the regret.
What’s that famous saying, “It is what it is.“?
If you reacted incorrectly, you can either be a victim,
Or you can be accountable and own up to what’s regrettable.

One more thought.
Sometimes, we live behind the regret.
And nothing gets done to handle the situation.
Keep it in the dark and the background of memory
Sometimes, what you’ve regretted comes back to haunt your future.
Or the regret will gnaw and worry you like acid.
It will errode your future potential
Your regrets become your habit
And habits are hard to break.
Unless you own it.
Do something bout it.

Oh, I’ve written about it.
Over a decade ago.
But maybe it’s wise to refresh
In the face of regretting the regrets.
