When I was younger, unless it was to read something I enjoyed, there were few things I slowed down to do. A family game was always appreciated and was often a slower-paced event. Building a model car or airplane, perhaps, but no Crossword puzzles, Jumble, or Chess. They were too slow and took way too much time. Time and action were things I treasured.
Except for reading or perhaps driving. Both required a sedate action.
Reading always demands a deep dive into a subject, and driving is most enjoyed when the trek covers hundreds of miles without care.
But then, I found Sudoku at a much later stage of life (a few years ago), and I thought, I like how this makes my mind consider numbers, order, and structure… hmm…algorithms. Maybe Chess wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Before I was born, a Jumble Puzzle started showing up in newsprint.

Now that it doesn’t look like a waste of time, where can I get a newspaper? I quit the local newspaper service because it didn’t get here early enough, and by the time I would read, the “news” was days old and already online one way or the other.
Consider this. The pace of life changes as you age. Besides your movements slowing down, your focus changes. Instead of scouting the edges of life, you find comfort in your own backyard. Instead of swilling coffee, you brew it for the intricate flavors and savor the cup. These days, I don’t road trip at night unless I have to – you miss so much along the pathway! Stop and enjoy the view!
I want to enjoy my pace of life and adjust to the differing seasons as they appear. I feel like my “summer season” is coming to a close. Fall may about be in full swing. But when winter comes, give me a good porch and view, and find that comfortable rocking chair that creaks as I slowly move. Yep…bring me a cup of slowly prepared black hot brew, and let me watch the sunset.
