Standing Before God Praying
Stand and Pray

We learned to pray because the Bible showed us a path. Without this knowledge, we might not have known what to do when times were tough, or our hearts were heavy. Without an understanding of God, we may have been like new civilizations, knowing we needed help and did not know where to go.

There’s not a better feeling in the world, it would seem, than someone speaking the words, “Let’s Pray.”

These past few days, I’ve listened to the cries of people struggling with their next steps as a new president takes over. Discordant sounds. Threatening voices and protesting actions. Local swearing they’ll sue!

And still, I’m not hearing anyone say, “Let’s pray.

I paid no attention to the day… I had other tasks to accomplish. Later, I swept through the news and videos to get the gist of the day.

There was a dedication prayer, a benediction prayer, and a prayer service during the inauguration period. Several prayed I am told, but I only had to listen to Reverand Lorenzo Sowell to know he would have been my favorite. (Click Here) In an interview, he stated, “Prayer is spontaneous!”

During the past two days, I spent time thinking about Sunday.

As I was drifting off to sleep,
Just last night,
So this thought is fresh,
A momentary issue struggled forward.
My mind raced. I must get up and do something.
What can I do?
The Spirit said, “Pray.”
I did, and the night’s sleep was restful.

But what about Sunday? Our closing song went something like this:

… I love You, Lord
Oh, Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

… And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

… I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
And in darkest night You are close like no other
I’ve known You as a Father
I’ve known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah

… And all my life You have been faithful, oh
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God, yeah

This morning, I thought about how this song is my prayer for the week. Just as we use Bible Scriptures as prayer (i.e., The Lord’s Prayer), this song augments my prayer. No matter what I say, I pray these words. All my life, Lord, You’ve been faithful. Good. And with every breath, I will sing of the goodness of God.
