A week of words
Silently enjoyed
As I am wont to do
Turn off the noise.
Enjoy the quiet.
Shhh…
Driving down the road
Distractions are enough
The racket of a radio
Is worse than the traffic noise.
Shhh…
The hubbub of a restaurant
Everyone talks at the same time
The clatter of dishes, pots and pans
Prevents me from hearing you.
Shhh…
Sitting in my airline seat.
My noise-cancelling headphones are ready.
They not only quiet the roar and noise.
Others know not to interrupt my attempt at quiet.
Shhh…
A mother stands over the manger scene
Picks up that swaddling bundle of love
Quietens the uncertainty and fear
That must press into tiny ears…
Shhh…
What must be the meaning of the sound?
Shhh… It’s not in my dictionary.
But as any parent knows, it’s a comforting moment.
Shhh… It’s alright. I’ve got this.
It’s like I imagine my Lord,
Holding me when the moment is tense.
With the pounding heartbeat in my chest…
Shhh… I’ve got this. Don’t worry. I’m here.
