Overnight, I had a dream—jumbled as usual and barely remembered in the light of day. A certain someone was in the dream, and I wanted to ask a question. In my dream, I planned on reaching out today. The sun rose, and a phone call came. This certain someone passed overnight.

The Bible talks about dreams and visions. Old folks are prone to one. Younger folks the other.

“And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.
(Joel 2:28 NKJV)

Not to take it out of context, but this scripture talks to me. And it’s often thought about.

When you’re young, you look to the future and envision what “then” will be like.
Maybe it’s the way I was back then. It was easy to pack up and move. But as I age and become more immobile, I tend to stay in my mind more.

Aging leaves me thinking about what was and is, and I often worry about what will come.

Maybe that’s how my dream views life. I’m in my mind and not striving to get up and go, and what I think about, worry about, and wish for has a way of sticking through the day and long into the night.

But Abram was 80 when God called him. Caleb, at 75, said, “I’m just as strong now as I was then, so give me this mountain.” Noah, at 500 years old, was in midlife when God told him to build the ark.

Of course, life is different now. At my age? Ask me to write a post, blog a thought, preach a sermon, or teach something to the younger folks, and I’m right there, willing to do it. I’m getting settled into a new season of life.

Hence… my dream.

That same dream also thought of another person and its disruption when they passed. No names… I’m sure it wasn’t you. But the thought is there. If we are so active and well-thought-out, our passing will cause a disruption. Plan for it better.

That’s my thought on the one side of life, as well as on the other side. Don’t let your dreams create a dead-end. Rather, let them prepare you for future possibilities. If you have a question, ask. If you need to make a call, don’t put it off. Do it now. Someday it will be too late.
