Changing Course

Across the pale, see, shadows end,
Beyond the borders we defend,
Lies a realm both strange and wide,
Where fear and wonder intertwine.

Step lightly past the line you know,
Into the place where courage grows.
For there, beyond the comfort’s veil,
True dreams are born—as you cross the pale.

What does it take to make a change? Vision. Courage. Desire? Perhaps a combination of these words and some I’m not recalling. I wonder about Columbus. What made him wish to find the other side? Abraham? Listened to God to leave and go until God said he was there. What makes us want to search the void of space? And, yes, I know. It’s not void, just cold, airless, and very dangerous.

As I near my starting point in the next decade, I’m thinking about what this portion of life should be like. It’s not happening as I dreamed. There’s still another boundary to overcome, another border to defy.

Between the millions of roads and air miles, I’m sure I’ve missed many opportunities to settle in and be satisfied. I don’t feel it. My mind could not accept it. Down the road and across the river, there! Beyond that pass of mountains standing tall. The unknown beckons.

Across the miles and through the years, I’ve always looked far. It’s no time to change my focus now.

I guess that’s my world, though the horizon narrows. There’s much to accomplish here and now, so I change my course. After 70 years had been reached, God said to Israel,

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,
says the LORD,
thoughts of peace and not of evil,
to give you a future and a hope.
(Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV)
