My Testimony
A long time ago, in a state far from here, I had a desire – Let’s call it Alaska!
I knew nothing about it except Johnny Horton singing that ol’ favorite song about going North! Of course, he also sang about the Battle of New Orleans, but that state was too close and had more alligators and snakes than you could shake a stick at!
I wanted distance. I wanted mountains, snow, and cold.
But one thing I knew: going when the timing is wrong is not smart.
So, I petitioned God.
Somewhere in that long-ago past
I learned that it is more than just asking,
It was willing to trust the answer,
And along the way, you must be willing to wait.
And when the waiting time has come and gone,
Then, at the right time and in the right way,
God would open up a door.
I wanted to be ready to walk through it.
This pretty much defines me – I’m willing to wait.
Sometimes, I get so focused on a potential opportunity that I do a lot of work to make it happen faster, but the goal is always to wait until the right time and then be ready to go.
While waiting for Alaska, my current responsibilities and family kept growing.
- My resume was improving!
- My son was born, and on vacation, he took his first steps in Anchorage.
- And my bride fell in love with the state.
Hidden in this is a key. Just because you are waiting doesn’t mean you sit with your hands folded or stuck under your thighs to keep them warm. No! You keep growing! I kept training for more responsibility and built a good family life.
The day came when a headhunter called from Arizona, holding an old version of my resume, and asked how badly I wanted to go to Alaska.
This day came over three years after I petitioned God.
How long are you willing to wait for your opportunity to do something in God’s timing more than in your own? What are you willing to do to keep the dream alive and make it more likely to happen?
I call that “The Open Door.”
It’s the same thing today as it was nearly 50 years ago… and over 2,000 years ago, Jesus spoke to the church of Philidelphia:
“I know your works.
See, I have set before you an open door,
and no one can shut it;
for you have a little strength,
have kept My word,
and have not denied My name.
(Revelation 3:8 NKJV)
Even as I age, nearly 50 years later, doors start to open. I’m willing to wait and continue to prepare, and when the time is right, I want to be ready to step through.
