In Step, Out of Step. In tune, out of tune.
In sync, or way out from the middle,
We each find our path, hopefully forward,
Finding the step we walk easiest to.
As I age, my bride and I are so in sync with life, but her steps are faster, if not longer, than mine. I stroll through the store. She marches. I browse, and she shops. I think and wander. She has purpose and focus. Even with the same shopping list, though I’ve been in the store more than she, my wandering out-of-focus shopping often gets the same results. Done. Her pace vs. mine.
Ailment slows me down. Long walks are not my friend. I’m entering a new life stride but comfortable with my step. It fits me, and I fit it, let’s saunter forward.
It’s hard to go into life ill-matched. Thousands of years ago, in a different but parallel context, the Apostle Paul warned Corinth not to be yoked with unbelievers.
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.
For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness?
And what communion has light with darkness?
And what accord has Christ with Belial?
Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
(2 Corinthians 6:14-15 NKJV)
If you track the word “unequally” or “yoked” backward, you’ll find the same warnings to Israel as they came out of Egypt. Find your partner, and walk in steps together even if you’re walking at different speeds. You adjust to each other and are equally tasked together; you’ll go far.
I’m a planner. I plod. There was a time when I was the action version of planning and a speedier version of plod. I’ve learned how to slow down today, but I’m still the same.
The hard part is learning to link yourself with others who are more action-oriented and stand back and watch them Plan and Do. Time speeds all things. Ask any dinosaur who used to program back in the prior century. Life is changing. It’s time to let those who can do things faster do.
Vacation starts tomorrow. I’m letting loose, unplugging (I hope), and not thinking about life back on the farm or in the work saddle. Come on, team! Do Life Well.
