It was the middle of the latest night
I woke for a few seconds, feeling a pain. No, it was an ache.
Before I knew it, this thought crept through my brain.
I now felt the lyrics of This Ole House.
A very popular song covered by many artists,
Song Writer, Stuart Hamblen, penned the words
Comparing our failing bodies and life
To the aging an old house.
Then, early this morning, I read an article
About a favorite horn player, recording artist
And part of the A&M Record Label Owners duo
Herb Alpert… 89, producing his 50th studio album.
Growing up, I seldom bought music.
We had a church library where we could check records out.
Although, along with Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold,
Herb Alpert’s and the Tijuana Brass were worth the cost
And now, at 89, he’s still going strong!
His elder sister is 98… Talk about longevity.
Okay. I’m creaking, a few nails missing,
And I walk more and more like Dad.
I’m starting to feel my near 70 trips around the sun.
But I don’t want to go out whimpering or dragging.
I still have 30 years to go to triple digits.
If any of this is true, this ol’ house needs some attention.
I had knee surgery five years ago, and then heel pain attacked me.
Hearing is fading and going once, twice… hang on! Not there yet.
It takes three pairs of glasses to see everything I need.
And there are the nights that the bones feel their age.
But I’m starting fresh this morning. Doing something about it.
I’m not sure what I’ll look like, but I’m sure my ’70s will be better.
