An old scale of weights and measures
All Things Being Equal

If my druthers were mine to own,
All things being equal,
I’d just do what I wanted
And forget about the rest.

But all things are not equal.
Some choices have preeminence.
Some paths cannot, nor should, be changed.
The ending will be what it will be.

Early morning musings, I thought about what I’d do if I had the option to do it. But the choices I’ve made through life keep me pounding the pavement of life to be productive with the path I’m walking.

My dreamscape describes a section of ground – that’s 640 acres if you remember your history correctly. Surrounded by tall mountains, deep forests, open pasture, rambling creeks, hanging glacier, and snow as frequently as I choose. Throw in some fishing ponds, and stock to keep you occupied.

Now, I just described a nightmare to some!

But if all things were equal, and money never the option, we would make life different than what we’re living today.

All things being equal…

I thought about the 12 disciples of Christ. Each had a unique calling in life they would have lived to the end and maybe never think about other options. Politically, they were not their own. Nationally, they tried their best to keep to their roots. Spirituallly, they kept looking for a redeemer. A messiah. A Christ.

But Jesus came by, and with a command in his ask, these 12 gave up their all to follow Him.

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Matthew 4:18-22 NKJV

I take special note that these first followers were brothers. Raised in their households with the same experience, and both families were left behind as they followed Christ. But think about Jesus’ simple approach. Follow Me. I have a new job for you!

…”No man ever spoke like this Man!”
John 7:46 NKJV

Why? What was the mesmerizing force of the man we call Jesus?

There had been other false christs. Israel was even looking, hoping and praying for something different than what walked among them.

All things being equal, they wanted Jesus to do things they always thought he would do. But Jesus had different plans. Other than Judas, they followed Him to the ending of their life.

All things being equal, they could not have asked for a better life.

Maybe it’s good to dream. Vision the future as different. Everysooften, open the closet tothat image and think what life would have been had all things been equal.

But do not throw away what you’ve invested yourself in today. There’s no better path than your spiritual walk with God. And as Dave Ramsey says, “If you live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.”
