Fanny Crosby
Fanny Crosby

By Fanny Crosby (And with John Sweney) 1880.

Fanny Crosby and John Sweney wrote this hymn and first published in 1880 in The Quiver of Sacred Song. It tells the story of Jesus’ life on Earth, including his incarnation, temptation in the desert, ministry, crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. The hymn includes allusions to scripture such as Luke 2:8–14, Luke 4:1–14, Isaiah 53:3–4, and Matthew 8:20

1 Tell me the story of Jesus, write on my heart every word;
tell me the story most precious, sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels, in chorus, sang as they welcomed His birth,
“Glory to God in the highest! Peace and good tidings to earth.”

Refrain:
Tell me the story of Jesus,
write on my heart every word;
tell me the story most precious,
sweetest that ever was heard.

2 Fasting alone in the desert, tell of the days that are past;
how for our sins He was tempted, yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor, tell of the sorrow He bore;
He was despised and afflicted, homeless, rejected, and poor. [Refrain]

3 Tell of the cross where they nailed Him, writhing in anguish and pain;
tell of the grave where they laid Him, tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender, clearer than ever I see:
stay, let me weep while you whisper, love paid the ransom for me. [Refrain]

There’s something about the old songs learned as a kid. Congregational, Specials, or in a Choir. Voices lifted high in the thrill of story, through trials dark, and hope on every hand. I especially enjoy this song as it was first published in a collection of songs called: The Quiver of Sacred Song

For me, songs are about story.
