Why do we say what we say…
When we say it…
And with the inflection and voice we use?
The old saying, Say what you mean…
Mean what you say, and make sure you say it right.
Once said, there’s no amount of takeback. (Horace)
We are victims of the words we say.
Between stimulus and response there is a space.
In that space is our power to choose our response.
In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
~Viktor E. Frankl
Faster than our minds, it seems,
We often speak before the mind engages.
But I know me… My mind never stops.
It’s always at work in the background.
But I still wonder why I say what I say.
Caught up in the moment?
The heat and rage of emotion boil.
When it’s better left unsaid,
We speak, and then we wonder why.
Learn from Jesus.
When caught in the moment of another’s accusation,
He stoops, writes in the sand, and after a healthy pause…
”He who is without sin, cast the first stone.” (John 8:7)
Learn some more…
“The words I speak are spirit and life.” (John 6:63)
”I speak in the world…my joy is fulfilled in them.” (John 17:13)
Paul tells us:
“And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5, NKJV)
Find your rhythm of words,
But know why you say what you say.
