Morning Walk With Friends
Lifelong Friends

It’s been an early Sunday morning,
A promised day of lower temps
And of all the days on my calendar,
I keep the pace slow. No skip or bounce.

I’m waiting for my bride to wake,
Dogs fed, garbage out, routine done.
It’s about time to get ready for church,
But a few more minutes… Coffee. Think. Pray. Write.

For some reason, I was thinking about friends.
Lifelong friends are few and far between,
From when I took my first breath,
To when that last comes with a sweet release.

There are a few friends who will call me out of the blue,
Or send a social post, text, or email to boot.
Even fewer are those who can meet,
Between their place or mine,
And we can enjoy fellowship…
When it happens, it’s divine.

Mostly, I feel stuck on a far away plain.
On the other side of the mountains,
Even an ocean away.
That’s when I know… It’s time to make new friends.

To do so, you must open up your horizons.
Friends are not just your family, neighbors, co-workers,
Or those you church and socialize with.
Friends speak up, step in, or lift a load. Friends care.

I remember a boss several levels above me.
Every morning, he came by to chat for months.
Then we moved to Alaska, and he soon passed on.
That short span of friendship sets the stage for reflection.
I must learn how to be that kind of friend.

I have brothers who are friends…
Different from each other as night is from day.
But if needed, they are there.
That’s the kind of friend I try to be…

I want to be like Jonathan was to the future King, David.

Now when he had finished speaking to Saul,
the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David,
and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore.
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant,
because he loved him as his own soul.
And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him
and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.
(1 Samuel 18:1-4 NKJV)

There is an old song,
We sang so long ago…
Friendship with Jesus.
Fellowship divine.
Oh, what blessed sweet communion.
Jesus is a friend of mine.
