Last night, celebrating the 4th, I paused to consider the cost and the waste. Along with the danger, and the fun, I struggled thinking about the benefits, reward, and wondering, “Is it worth it?”

Of course, innocent pets and farm animals may not understand. I know my hummingbirds were freaked out. The stray cat never showed up.

Much of celebration in my part of the world is probably illegal. Fireworks bought from a reservation are probably not kosher here.

As a kid it was one thing to celebrate, as an adult I prefer silence.

The debris field is huge.

We stayed up late to make sure no fires would encroach. It’s been dry.

I’d just as soon look at the stars and wait for meteor showers.
