This morning, I was perusing headlines about politics, war, and protests. Who do you believe? It’s overwhelming the clamoring voices trying to get you on their side of the fence. For too many, they equate volume to validity. The louder they get, the more you are supposed to believe them. Right?!
I paused, and a thought trickled into my spirit: Who Do I Believe?
It’s a scriptural thought that was prophecy shared about the Messiah.
Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:1-5 NKJV)
Read the entire chapter. There’s more than just what I shared here.
Hundreds of years later, the Apostle Paul references this set of scriptures and adds a layer of thought to the process.
But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Isaiah says, “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?”
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
(Romans 10:16-17 NKJV)
Notice the keyword? Faith…
He wasn’t talking about faith in the talking heads of the news cycle or a Hollywood entertainer performing a script in a movie or TV show. Paul isn’t talking about advertisers touting weight loss or some new drug to fix your problems.
It’s not listening to gossip over the backyard fence or on some social platform.
It’s choosing to listen better, to a better source of input, and to let that knowledge guide your perception of the world around you.
Ignore the pop-up ad campaigns on your smart devices that are trying to get you sucked into their news story. I’ve even turned off the alerts for missing children, the elderly, or the medically challenged!
There must be a key. What could it be? Voila! It’s believing in God’s Word. Faith.
Faith comes by hearing…and we all need to hear the truth.
But what do we listen to? Where can we find the truth? The Word of God!
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
For by it [faith] the elders obtained a good testimony.
(Hebrews 11:1-2 NKJV)
