I wish I had a better list
From all my travels in life
Of the unique names of towns,
That has graced my path.
Though I’m from Baytown and have lived in Seabrook,
I graduated High School from LaPorte,
I spent most of my teen years in Channelview…
Get the point?
All water-based names east and south of Houston,
Nicknamed as the Bayou City…
From which everything drains into the Gulf of Mexico!
But the places I remember often with mirth…
Bucksnort, TN…
Must be, or have been…
A good place to listen to deer
In the bushes and creek beds.
Or, a “snort” of moonshine costs a buck…
Deadhorse, AK…
No. There’s nothing about horses here.
Alive or dead.
It was the name of a hauling firm.
Dead Horse Haulers.
Cut and Shoot, TX…
Now, this is interesting…
It has something to do with the local community church
Managed by the hardshell Baptists and Methodists,
Not wanting Mormons or Apostolics to make use of the building.
A fight ensured. There was some cutting and shooting involved.
(More unique Texas names are in the link.)
Tenino, WA…
Just a dozen miles away, the name is lost to history.
The one I like? It was named for a whistle-stop
For a railroad line, numbered 10-9-0: Ten Nine O
Or it’s a Native American word with roots in Oregon!
How about you?
Any strange or unique names?
I’d love to hear from you.
Who knows where it may show up in my writings?
Thank you for reading.
Please share with others.
