Mother's Day Cards captured in 2024
Mother's Day Cards from Elementary School Days

I glanced through a box of memories…
Mom had saved our awards, placards, and “artwork.”
Little hands, young hearts, with not one clue
Of how things work even when you’ve made it to school.

Mom turned 20 years old just months after I was born.
Wow! She was only 19 on my birthday.
Dad worked shift work and had already been to “war.”
But I have great memories of those years, sixty and more ago.

Step by step, I’ve filled her footprints, always moving forward.
There’s something special about following and learning…and then leading.

Study habits.
Love of Reading.
Being the oldest of four and from her the youngest of three.
Driving wherever I wanted and never feeling like I couldn’t.
Standing in front of others.
Being strong.
Loving others, even when they’re wrong (!!).
Words we never say and names we never use.
Learning you’ll not always get what you want.
Extending love and help to those less fortunate.
Never afraid to tackle a project with a hammer in hand.
Standing up to the wrong around me.
Being patient even when patience runs thin.
At the drop of a hat, let’s get in the car and drive!
Learning how aging takes its toll.
Shrimp… oh, the shrimp by hundreds of lbs…
Peanut butter instead of watermelon.

I’m afraid there’s no end to these points.
I said the same on her birthday just a couple of weeks ago.
Mom… Love you. Stay sane. Keep leading.
Many more miles to go… (I learned Robert Frost from you.)

I’ve paused today to think about this.
Times are different today than they were back then.
But you’ll never know unless you have the future they gave you.
But what you’ve been given needs to be shared in the future.
Learn well, grasshopper (from a favorite story of the 70s.)
Enjoy the stories— they are memories to share.

I glance into the yard with her fur babies all in step.
My bride is a great mother.
Her children had good steps to walk in.
And her love is given without thought…

She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.”
(Proverbs 31:27-29 NKJV)

Thank you for reading.
Please share with others.
It helps me get my book written!
