Penny jar, and long before it was spent,
I looked for coins to fit in my collection book.
An aunt had a silver dime bottle
I seem to remember it saved for vacation.
Change for a dollar for a Coke?
Hmmm. A pouch full of change.
Most of it is silver. 10 Silver Dimes!
Ancient and much sought after.
Quick! Get another dollar!
I’ve put away change for years.
Roll it up and deposit a thousand or two,
Here and there, then and now.
Even when it was stolen…I’m sad to see it go.
As a bank teller,
I kept my eyes open for collectibles.
We were allowed to set it aside
And buy when payday rolled around.
An aunt, a sister of my dad’s,
Used to give out Silver Dollars
For treats and thank-you’s…
I still have several.
My first pay was a nickel, then a dollar,
And finally, I’m billed at over $150 per hour. Ca-Ching!
Grandmother always gave us a $2 bill…till 18 years old.
Again, I’m keeping them. Socked away.
Around the house and through the office
There are jars for collecting the change
It has taken years now for us to be more digital than tactile.
But when there are coins, clink, save for the future.
It’s change in the making.
We saved for rainy days,
For when you had nothing and needed something.
Dig out the ashtray in the truck,
Under the seats or cushions of the couch…
Some toss their coins to the side…
I still pick up parking lot riches.
Pennies, nickels, dimes, and sometimes quarters.
I’m not too proud. Change for the future.
That’s the way I read and cherish
Words, phrases, memories of the now
Filed away for that rainy day
Changes my future, or so I say.
If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my hard service I will wait,
Till my change comes.
(Job 14:14 NKJV)
There is desirable treasure,
And oil in the dwelling of the wise,
But a foolish man squanders it.
(Proverbs 21:20 NKJV)
