Sleeping Lady, Mt Susitna, Anchorage Viewpoint
Sleeping Lady

Now that I’m older, I respect sleep more.
When I was a younger adult, I thought nothing about it.
But nearing the next decade of life,
I realize it is necessary, and life would be difficult without it.

I’ve been proud to be an early riser,
Knowing that the full day is ahead.
But on this current vacation trip, I’ve slept.
Hard. Long. And often. What gives?

It’s been a tiring 2024 thus far.
Workers in the house, adjusting our comfort.
My bride is working again, and her shift begins at 6:30.
Feeling my age. Not fully recovered from an accident.

This morning, up for several hours,
I’m already yawning, and activities are calling.
Why do I sleep? Resting the body and mind.
At least, that’s what they say. Any other reason?

Sleep apnea comes to mind. Sinus issues another.
Tired and aching muscles and joints.
Uncle Arthur? Perhaps. But the mattress is partially to blame.
Regardless, I seem to enjoy sleeping more frequently.

Maybe it’s the temps. It must be cool. Alright. Cold!
Maybe it’s the lights—the darker the cave, the better.
We’re on vacation. That means a different experience.
Whatever the reason may be, I enjoy more daytime sleep.

Some things you can control.
Other things you live with.
Getting the mind to sleep. That’s crucial.
Otherwise, sleep never happens, no matter the surroundings.

When my kids were babes and fighting sleep,
While holding them during this struggle
I found a gentle blowing on their eyes
Perhaps the dryness helped. They closed their eyes.
Sleep. Restful sleep.

Across from Anchorage, a mountain in repose.
The Sleeping Lady is what she’s known for.
Someday, the Lady awakes.
Until then, sleep on.

A Prayer Before Sleeping

Dear God, as I lay me down to sleep,
relax the tension of my body;
calm the restlessness of my mind;
still, the thoughts that worry and perplex me.
Help me to rest myself and all my problems in your strong and loving arms.
Let your Spirit speak to my mind and heart while I am
asleep so that when I wake up in the morning,
I may find that I have received in the night-time,
light for my way;
strength for my tasks;
peace for my worries;
forgiveness for my sins.
Grant me sleep tonight and tomorrow power to live.
