A long time ago, I chose,
To be me the best way I know how.
I’m not you, them, or anyone else.
To tell you the truth, you get me, and only me.
There’s something about mimicking others.
That is the only thing some can do
Dress the part, talk the lingo, or even make-believe
Just pretend. That’s all they know how to do.
Along that same thought, there’s often nothing
That is more original than the original of anything.
To be the first to be or not to be is a choice.
Of being the first “you” that ever exists.
I want to be an original in a copycat world.
The way I think, talk, and engage with my circle and beyond
To know my foundation comes from others,
That must be part of my life, but to be the best me…
Those close to me know part of the “real me.”
But it’s a lifetime of hanging around
Before the real me makes an appearance
I’ve been called a Renassaince Man by some who may guess
But I’m sure they’ll never know – they only see me in light of other times.
Here’s the original I want to be.
To believe the Word, follow my Lord, and do
As He beckons me forward. I’ll do my best – thimk, and do.
And that’s the best original I can be.
