Implausible Platitudes

I’m sure thousands of pithy sayings identify life from a particular viewpoint. Right? We heard them, used them, debated what they meant, and sort of shrugged our way through life with the words ringing in our ears.

Not all platitudes from the past survive in current times. Specifically, I’m thinking of a “nursery rhyme” (??) that talks about baking 24 blackbirds in a pie. Yuck!

To everything we’ve heard, believed, recited, and applauded, there is probably a different way of looking at and realizing these platitudes are implausible.

Specifically, the keyword in the heading is Platitidue. That sounds like attitude, right? A platitude is often a saying related to a phrase with a moral content to help move us down the right road in life.

Maybe we don’t have any new platitudes, but there are plenty of historical ones you still hear bandied about today. Have you ever used one?

Platitudes

  • You always hurt the ones you love.
    • Give me a break!
  • Early to bed. Early to rise. Makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
    • Tells that to the likes of Elon Musk.
  • You can have your cake and eat it too.
    • What does this even mean???
  • Winners never quit, and quitters never win.
    • Winners know when to quit and from what and go with that which will create a win.
  • When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
    • The tough is always going. When others find the going tough and quit, the tough are still moving!
  • It’s better to be safe than sorry.
    • Results come from hard work, knowing when to take chances, and not being fearful.
  • Good things come to those who wait.
    • Patience can be the key, but being ready to work hard produces better results in the long term.
  • You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
    • May be true if the old dog isn’t willing to learn.
  • I’m rubber. You’re Glue. What you say bounces off me And sticks on you.
  • Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
    • But… We know words do hurt!

Maybe you would share your remembrances and let’s see if they ring true in this modern world!

There are many sayings that have no moral content, but we still use them. Why does stepping on a crack break our mother’s back?
