Coffee Matters

While teaching a recent mid-week Bible study I mentioned the problem of poorly packaged coffee. Yes. I’ve migrated to K-Cups for a quick fix, but I love coffee so much that I’m willing to take the time to brew the perfect cup or pot!

I did that a few minutes ago! (Sample video below!)

When young, we bought canned ground coffee for particular brewing methods. Drip Grind was normal for our house, but there was also a grind for percolators. Back then I remember Maryland Club as the coffee of choice. You had to look at the label and ensure you bought the correct grind.

Of course, you have to know that the smell of roasting coffee tagged me when I was 3, or possibly 4 years old. [Read Here]

Today, I love Folger’s Black Silk. It’s moderately strong but better tasting than the regular grind sold by Folgers. Even my bride enjoys it! That says a lot!

While researching this morning, I found this particular piece of news I had never heard before:

In 1969, coffee lovers received some devastating news when the heiress to the Folger’s Coffee fortune, Abigail Folger, was killed. She was visiting actress Sharon Tate in the home of Roman Polanski during the time of the Mansion family attacks.

Since I had a slight connection to some school chums related to Sharon Tate, I’m sure the focus was on her and not the others.

Learning Coffee Equals Life Lessons

My granddad (maternal) seemed impervious to heat and hot – he could pick up a coffee pot with his bare hands while the rest of us used tools! I watched him pour a cup without flinching from a hot pot!

I remember something else, and I’m not so sure of the facts. My dad’s parents got a stipend for groceries during those early years, and it seemed they could get a sack of green coffee beans for you to roast yourself at home. Hmmm… I need to verify this memory.

My coffee of choice is Black and Strong.

Dad taught me to learn to drink without the additives many put in their cup, and I could drink coffee anytime! I still do. Black. Strong.

Of course, the same logic applied to learning to drive a standard shift – learn this, he said, and you’ll always be able to drive anywhere! That applied when I drove a standard shift in Scotland – wrong hand shifting, driving from the wrong side of the car, and the wrong side of the road! Training Worked!

Straight espresso, Turkish, Americano, Drip, Percolator, Steamed, Boiled, French Pressed or brewed over a campfire with boiling water, a handful of coffee, and maybe some salt (supposed to help tone down the bitter taste.)

These are not the only ways to enjoy coffee, but they come to mind as I remember all the ways I’ve sampled them.

Give Me Coffee

Back in 2020, as we were preparing for the end-of-year isolated pandemic weirdly closeout year, I thought about the times gone by when we enjoyed coffee made so differently than today’s normal. I made a video. I hope you’ll watch and enjoy it as much as I enjoyed sharing it back then.
