The plans are wrapping up. We will say farewell to my dad, George Gurley, next Wednesday. Mom and Dad, married for 66 years, had their headstone prepared a dozen years or so… I’m happy we don’t need to be concerned about it.
Obituary
George Ray Gurley, 89, passed from this life on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at his home in Pearland, Texas.
George was born on April 4, 1930 in Baytown, Texas to James Calvin and Nannie Leola Parrish Gurley. He attended school in Ace, Schwab City and Livingston, Texas. George went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force from 1949-1953, where he was stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge. After his military service, he built a career employed at Champion Paper Company, SOHIO and British Petroleum.
He married the love of his life, Barbara Simmons Gurley, on March 27, 1954. Together, they raised three sons and one daughter.
All who knew George knew that he loved life, his family and his friends. He loved to sing. He loved his group of friends at Wal-Mart McDonald’s in Pearland, where you’d often find him drinking coffee and singing. He enjoyed visiting with the Ace kids, playing dominos (42) and caring for his pets: Maxwell Moon, Sabrina, Gizmo, Scampi and Holly.
George is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons, Mike Gurley and wife, Brenda of Yelm, Washington, Vaughn Gurley and wife, Gayla of Lake Murvaul, Texas, Ken Gurley and wife, Tessie of Pearland, Texas; his grandchildren, Jason Andrew Gurley, Elizabeth Dawn Gurley, Kenneth Ray Gurley, Jonathan Michael Gurley, April Christine Spell, Jared Kendall Gurley, Ashley T’Neil Walea, Kinsie Lauren Johns, Vicky Rochelle Whisenant and Lance Allen Sweenhart; his brother, Henry Wyatt Gurley, as well as eighteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Ann Gurley; his siblings, Lela Brown, Edna Dickens, Velma Smith, Alton Gurley, Imogene Fleming, Roy Eugene Gurley and Anna Ukmar and his parents, James and Leola Gurley.
Celebration of Life
The celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at First Church, 1850 Broadway in Pearland, Texas, officiated by Tyler Walea, Mike Gurley, Vaughn Gurley and Ken Gurley, followed by a private family interment in Livingston, Texas. Arrangements have been entrusted to Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcroft Street, Houston, Texas 77081.
