It will be a scorcher today. High 80’s forecasted but pockets of 90’s expected.

Regardless. We are taking a break from normal life and find ourselves in downtown Seattle with my daughter celebrating an early Mother’s Day moment.

You can sleep the excitement away!!! Not me!

It’s always been fascinating watching new high rise construction. From my years in downtown Houston, working in Manhattan, even here where my morning coffee and pre-hot burner day enjoys the cool view of 3 cranes, 5 elevators for the workers, and 18-wheelers lined around the corner delivering the materials assembling this new Amazon building.

The foundations are several hundred feet below. The scaffolding is in place and moving with the mounting building. The emergency generators are installed and already tested if the exhaust blackened ports are any indication. There is still entry to the substrate that forklifts still drive down.

The orchestration of the constant movement from nothing to a future worker filled monstrosity is fascinating! It’s a constant movement!

From my shaded and cool perch I could watch this all day!

As the crane picks up the loads from the trucks and lifts them onto a perched platform several stories up, I pause and think of the potential dangers and all the safety considerations in place.

Isn’t this like life? We “go forth” and build, but too often we don’t consider our safety needs. What’s out backdrop, cushion, catcher if we fall? Where is our comfort zone? Insurance? Assurance?

Fear of failure and having to start over often keeps us settled in as Watchers and not Doers! Maybe we need to coach the next generation better. Without risk takers, we would have no forward movement. The risks can be calculated and mitigated by protection parameters. Safety nets installed? Sure!

Hmmm. I wonder what safety nets the moon landers had when they left the safety of good ol’ earth and blasted to that silver ball we watch in the night sky? Or the Vikings? Columbus? Wright Brothers? Trail breakers? Waymakers?

Just thinking!
